In 2010 my husband Dennis and I retired to Placerville CA and love living in the foothills. We have one son, Karl who's 32, and works as a project engineer in the solar field.I feel very grateful for a fulfilling, peaceful life. After college at SF State I taught elementary school and music, was a church choir director, stayed home when our son was young, and was the administrator of a small NGO. Retirement is great with gardening, swimming in the American River, music jamming with buddies, traveling, entertaining, and enjoying whatever else comes up. Dennis taught ESL at City College of SF, and is also a master pianist as well as an avid gardener. Looking back on school-life from Redwood Heights Elementary, Bret Harte Jr. High, and Skyline, I give thanks for wonderful friendships and education. Music has always been key in my life and was well-nurtured in all those settings. Blessings all around to the Class of 64!! Marsha |

Here's an updateAfter flunking out of San Jose State my first semester in 1964, along with at least one of you, I drifted along, got married, got divorced, got married, had twins sons, got divorced after 23 years, came out as a lesbian. Then I went back to school, got my degrees in Psychology and Business, got serious about a career, met my future wife, Cheron, and we moved in together. After working for the State of California for lots of years I retired in 2005. I had been living in the Sacramento area for about 10 years, working as an IT Project Manager for the Dept. of Social Services. I began working for the Department in Oakland in the late 80’s, beginning by adjudicating disability claims for Social Security, making the medical determination for disability. After several promotions I ended up in Sacramento in the IT field. I am an accidental techi. In 2005 my domestic partner, Cheron, and I moved up to Port Townsend, Washington where I began my next life phase, retirement. Best job I’ve ever had, although the boss is a bit prickly at times. I re-kindled my passion for art and began to seriously study acrylic painting. After a few years I was accepted into a couple of local galleries. I continue painting and love the challenges. I have dropped all of my galleries at this point because I needed a break from the business. It’s more fun to paint what I want rather than painting to sell. Now I have more time to enjoy the beautiful environment of the Olympic Peninsula. I absolutely love living here. It’s a small town with a big heart. Lots of artists of all kinds, wooden boats, victorian homes, and drop dead scenery. After coming out in my mid-40’s I found myself and, eventually, my life partner Cheron. We were able to marry here in Washington state this last year. It was on our 19th anniversary as a couple that we were married in Port Townsend with both of my grown sons and our grandson attending, along with some of Cheron’s Michigan family. It was a touching and special time. This year is a big travel one for us. We had promised our Grandson David that we would take him on a trip anywhere in the world when he graduates from High School. This June he graduates and he has selected Lucca, Italy as his place. So, June 1st we fly down to Sacramento for his graduation and on June 4th David, Cheron, my son Adam and his wife Jennifer, and I all fly out to Italy. At the end of our tour with the family, Cheron and I are going to Delft, Holland for another 10 days on our own. After Europe, I am home 5 days and then I am off to Victoria, Canada for a 2 week artist residency. This is my 4th year attending The Vancouver Island School of Art and it’s always fabulous, intense and inspiring. We’ll see how I do with my travel weary/time zone challenged brain does this year! And then, of course, we drive down to California in August! We decided to forego the formal reunion. Not only is money a bit tight this year because of our trips, but I really haven’t stayed in touch with most of our alumni. And I don’t even know most of them. So, instead of spending time and money on strangers, we’d rather spend it with friends in Soquel and just mosey back up north after seeing “our gang”. We’ll be driving down and back and it will be nice to take some time to enjoy the Oregon coast on the way home for a change. After California, Cheron and I fly back to Michigan for a family reunion with all of her kith and kin, and another week or so of traveling. I guess this will be my Year of Big Travels, ha ha! Life is full and rich and I find myself happy and feeling durn lucky for the life I’ve been given. |
