From Stanton:I laughed at seeing my occupation as "dogowner". How long since I made that entry!
I wasn't always a dogowner. After leaving Skyline I spent 1 1/2 years at Northern Arizona University and a semester at OCC on Grove St before enlisting in the Marines in early 67. I ended up serving 4 years on a 3 year enlistment mostly because of lengthy hospitalizations totaling more than a year for Vietnam and later injuries. In 73 I finished my BA in Psychology at Cal-State Hayward, got married and went to work for Longs Drugs Stores. 5 years later I began a career with the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) as a National Service Officer in our San Francisco office. I was transferred to the Columbia SC office in 92 and retired in 2000. I ran a prison ministry for 10 years (One -to-One Prison Ministry) and in 2011 became a full-time dog owner. I coached a men's baseball team in 2019 and 2020 before acknowledging I no longer belong on a baseball field. Aside from the oppressive heat and humidity, Columbia has proven to be a great place to live. My wife, Ann, died unexpectedly in December 2020, after 38 wonderful years together. My 11 y/o Staffordshire Terrier, Andy, had surgery on July 29th to remove 'suspicious' masses in his esophagus and lower intestine, and I am joyfully playing nurse, grateful he came through a touch and go lengthy surgery. 9 years with Andy is all the more meaningful in the wake of Ann's death. After 29 years in the South, I feel the pull to return to Oakland. But who wants to pack up a house at our age. Moreover, the house I sold in 92 for $173K when leaving for South Carolina sold 2 months ago for $1.1 million. It's 100 y/o, made of stucco and is <1200sqft.
